Advanced monitoring and simulation for underground gas storage risk management

It is crucial to ensure the safety and integrity of underground gas storage (UGS) infrastructure for energy reliability in California, many other places around world. To address risk management need UGS industry, we take advantage recent advances downhole fiber optic monitoring coupled well-reservoir simulation provide unprecedented understanding flow wells at sites. We have combined advanced operations into a decision-support system called Integrated Risk Management Decision Support System (IRMDSS). The IRMDSS framework includes three components: (i) mechanistic models, (ii) continuous frequent data, (iii) supervisory interface performing analyses using models data. goal equip operators with real-time data tools that can alert them potential failures, detect early leakage, support mitigation decision-making prevent otherwise larger failures. demonstrate an application by analyzing temperature pressure response hypothetical leak. Through review distributed sensing (DTS) collected operating facility show DTS uniquely precisely identify depth gas-water-contact well annulus, warning signal upward as would occur blowout scenario. When modeling analysis, rough leak rate be roughly estimated understand severity leakage conditions decision needed.
